Learn how students created these patchwork elephants in art class!
During the first art classes, we read Elmer by David McKee. This is the story of a patchwork elephant and his journey to appreciate his own unique qualities. I related the story to art in that we all have differing artistic styles--which is a WONDERFUL thing! We recognized as a group the pressure children may feel to try to make their work look like that of their peers. So this year, we are all celebrating our different artistic styles. After all, we would not have so many wonderful pieces of artwork in the world if all artists were striving for uniformity. Once we read the story, each child decorated their own Elmer in a unique way. I have hung all of the students' beautiful elephants in the two hallways near the main entrance. Mrs. Aucter
