I want to share a post from Mrs. Austin-Fleming's kindergarten blog where she wrote about discovery during the first few weeks of school.
"The first few days and weeks of school are filled with discovery. In the midst of all the newness that is unfolding in the classroom, we emphasize routines and clear expectations to build a sense of security and comfort for children. Students begin to notice the familiar pattern of the day and remember expectations for their behavior during each part of the routine. When children know what to do and what's coming next, they feel safe in their surroundings and take responsibility for their actions.
Our daily schedule begins with a group circle time called Morning Meeting. We have been learning names and getting acquainted through songs, games, and movement activities. Routines at Morning Meeting include stretching, dancing, singing, saying a greeting, checking the schedule, and reading the message together. Each day starts in a fun and welcoming way."
You will see a similar start to the school year in each of the classrooms at UID for a very good reason. Teaching children the rhythm of the day so they know what's going to happen helps them feel safe and helps them to become confident learners. Whether you are a kindergarten student or a third grader, there are always routines and expectations to be remembered or learned for the first time. I hope your family's start to the school year has been secure and welcoming and you and your children are ready for a fun year of learning.
Sincerely,
